Western Lake Macquarie
Suburbs and villages including Arcadia Vale, Wangi Wangi, Morisset, and Brightwaters are on peninsulas south-east of the towns of Toronto and Carey Bay, on the western side of Lake Macquarie.
Coal mining was performed in this area from 1841 to around 1906 and was operated by Reverend Lancelot Threlkeld, a missionary to the Awabakal people, local entrepreneur and the first European landholder of the Coal Point to Toronto area.
Western Lake Macquarie has a diverse socio-economic demographic with a mix of both historic and contemporary homes. There are numerous lakeside parks and boat ramps in the area and deep water just off the shoreline, making fishing and boating a popular pastime.
The Watagan Mountains form the backdrop to the Suburb and the Beaches on the Eastern side of the Lake are 30 minutes away as are the Hunter Valley Vineyards. Take a day trip up to the Watagan Mountains, beach and the Hunter Valley Vineyards for a wine tasting tour or a Concert in the Vineyards.

Buttaba is a on the western shore of Lake Macquarie between the towns of Toronto, Morisset and close to Rathmines.
It’s approximately 97kms from the Sydney and covers an area of 1.933 square kilometres.
Buttaba has all the benefits of lakeside living and is only a 7 minutes to Toronto Central Business District. The suburb has a mixture of waterfront properties, many with water views and bush settings.
Dora Creek
Dora Creek is a small rural suburb located west of Lake Macquarie, north of the town of Morisset.
Dora Creek runs through the centre of the small village, h its centre, originally known as Doree Doree in the local Aboriginal language, meaning “Creek running into a lake”.[2]
An interesting geological phenomena at Dora Creek’s connection to the lakeis that the banks of the creek have formed into two peninsula jutting out into the lake like a point which explains the aboriginal name, the creek is literally in a lake and the points are just the banks of the creek!
Lake Macquarie Council has placed emphasis on the Dora Creek environment, carrying out major foreshore restoration works, and educating the public about the protection of creeks and waterways.
The Village has its own Railway Station and is close to the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway.
Fishing Point
Fishing Point is located on the western shore ofu00a0Lake Macquarieu00a0on a peninsula south ofu00a0Rathmines.
It approximately 97kms from theu00a0 Sydney and 40 minutes drivefrom Newcastle City.
This peninsular is well known for its waterfront properties and its lake and ocean views with several elevated properties looking over the lake and out to the ocean.
Close to Rathmines shopping strip and 2 boat ramps, Fishing Point is an exclusive peninsular and a popular tourist destination.
Marmong Point
Marmong Point is north-north-east of the town ofu00a0Torontou00a0on the western shore ofu00a0Lake Macquarie. Marmong is anu00a0Aboriginalu00a0word meaning low water or swampy water.
Marmong Point Marina is a great port for boaties looking for a perfect base from which to explore Lake Macquarie being just 60 nautical miles north of Sydney Harbour Heads.
The area is an ideal and quiet alternative for sailors and anglersu00a0 rather than the Sydney, Newcastle, and Port Stephens regions.
Wangi Wangi
Wangi Wangi is a peninsula jutting eastwards into Lake Macquarie.
The township is a well-known holiday spot, that was frequented in the early days by families from the Newcastle and Hunter Valley coalfields. It is known for its scenic views, bush-walking, and fishing spots.
It is only 4m above sea-level and 128 km north of Sydney via the M1 – Pacific Highway.
Known locally just as ‘Wangi’, Wangi Wangi is a quiet holiday and retirement town which is known to a generation of Australians as the home of the famous artist William Dobell who’s home is open to visitors.
It part of the Lake Macquarie State Conservation Area, and is just a short distance from the entrance to the lake at Swansea and Swansea Heads.
Besides Dobell House, there’s the Wangi Point Flora and Fauna Reserve and, like all the towns around the lake, it is popular for fishing, swimming, boating, picnics, and camping.
